Data Centers & AG Land

Data centers are unique because their impacts extend far beyond the property they’re built on. They require enormous investments in electrical infrastructure, transmission capacity, substations, fiber, and often significant water resources.

At the same time, Canyon County is facing real questions about long-term water availability, to the point that the Idaho Department of Water Resources has placed a moratorium on new groundwater appropriations in parts of the county while it studies available supply. These are not theoretical concerns—they’re real infrastructure constraints. Before converting productive agricultural land, the County has a responsibility to determine whether these uses are sustainable, whether adequate infrastructure exists to support them, and whether the long-term public benefits outweigh the permanent impacts on water resources, electrical capacity, transportation systems, and other infrastructure essential to the surrounding agricultural landscape.
